The pig has recently become popular as a large animal experimental model in many fields of biomedical research. The aim of this study is to evaluate the basic anatomical structures in the head region of the pig to lay the groundwork for its practical clinical usage or pre‐clinical research in the future. We used three different diagnostic imaging methods: radiography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The analysis showed that radiographic imaging is suitable only for general evaluation of the facial area of the pig skull. CT images showed excellent spatial definition of bony structures of the whole craniofacial area, and MRI images revealed fine soft tissue details. Radiography is preferentially suited to general assessment of bone structures of the facial skeleton; however, the thick layer of adipose tissue in the craniofacial region of the pig makes the imaging of some parts difficult or even impossible. CT is useful for revealing morphological details of mineralized tissues, whereas MRI is more suitable for soft tissue analysis and the detection of subtle pathologic changes in both bone and soft tissues. Therefore, before using pigs as an experimental model in craniofacial research, it is necessary to evaluate the suitability and disadvantages of potential imaging methods and how appropriate they are for accurate visualization of desired structures. 相似文献

Background: Forest ecosystem functioning is strongly influenced by the absorption of photosynthetically active radiation (APAR), and therefore, accurate predictions of APAR are critical for many process-based forest growth models. The Lambert-Beer law can be applied to estimate APAR for simple homogeneous canopies composed of one layer, one species, and no canopy gaps. However, the vertical and horizontal structure of forest canopies is rarely homogeneous. Detailed tree-level models can account for this heterogeneity but these often have high input and computational demands and work on finer temporal and spatial resolutions than required by stand-level growth models. The aim of this study was to test a stand-level light absorption model that can estimate APAR by individual species in mixed-species and multi-layered stands with any degree of canopy openness including open-grown trees to closed canopies. Methods: The stand-level model was compared with a detailed tree-level model that has already been tested in mixed-species stands using empirical data. Both models were parameterised for five different forests, including a wide range of species compositions, species proportions, stand densities, crown architectures and canopy structures. Results: The stand-level model performed well in all stands except in the stand where extinction coefficients were unusually variable and it appears unlikely that APAR could be predicted in such stands using (tree- or stand-level) models that do not allow individuals of a given species to have different extinction coefficients, leaf-area density or analogous parameters. Conclusion: This model is parameterised with species-specific information about extinction coefficients and mean crown length, diameter, height and leaf area. Survival of P. pinea seeds is climate-controlled through the timing of the dry period together with masting occurrence. This study was aimed at construction of reference (physiological) value intervals determined by lower 2.5% and upper 97.5% quantiles for total plasma protein (TPP) in farmed rainbow trout, Oncorhychus mykiss (Kamloops strain), aged 10–12 months (n=755). Total plasma protein in male trout from raceway culture was found to be significantly greater (38–58.3 g L?1) relative to females (31–51.5 g L?1). Total plasma protein in trout from cage culture was significantly greater (32–54 g L?1) compared with the raceway culture (31–49 g L?1). Moderate product–moment correlations between TPP and cholesterol (r=0.8730), TPP and total calcium (r=0.8188), TPP and alanine aminotransferase (r=0.6200) and between TPP and aspartate aminotransferase (r=0.6430) were estimated. The activity and molecular forms of acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7) were characterized in the brain, heart, white skeletal muscle and liver of the Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baeri), European eel (Anguilla anguilla), wels (Silurus glanis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), belonging in four families. The brain had the highest (between 183.2±10.6 and 1361.2±189.7 mU mg-1 protein and between 4.7±0.4 and 23.5±2.7 U g-1 wet tissue) and the liver the lowest (between 25.3±1.9 and 126.5±22.7 mU mg-1 protein and between 1.0±0.1 and 4.5±0.5 U g-1 wet tissue) activity in all these fish, with the exception of the wels, where the heart contained the smallest amount of AChE (26.2±7.5 mU mg-1 protein and 1.2±0.3 U g-1 wet tissue). The highest tissue AChE activity was found in the carp and lowest in the sturgeon. The solubility properties and molecular forms of AChE in the four tissues were studied by extraction in high-salt medium (1.0 M NaCl) with and without the detergent Triton X-100 (0.5%, v/v). The proportions of detergent-soluble (DS) and salt-soluble (SS) forms of AChE varied considerably from one species to another, but a general tendency could be observed: the proportion of DS AChE was generally higher in the brain (between 70.4±4.1 and 82.5±1.2%) and lower in the heart (between 12.0±2.0 and 51.3±2.3%) and skeletal muscle (between 16.0±2.0 and 64.4±0.7%). Velocity sedimentation centrifugation revealed that most tissues contained the G4 or A4 form. Three tissues (brain, heart, and liver) of the Siberian sturgeon contained a relatively high proportion of the G1 form (between 24.3±2.4 and 28.6±4.9%), while the skeletal muscle of the wels contained only the most complex type of AChE, i.e., A12. Amongst the tissues studied, the brain and liver mostly contained amphiphilic globular forms of the G4 type, while the heart and skeletal muscle were rich in asymmetric forms (A4 and A12). It was concluded that the differences revealed in the activities of AChE and in the distribution of its molecular forms may be connected with the variation in behavioral habits (feeding and swimming patterns), and the developmental stage of the nervous system. 相似文献

Lime and phosphorus (P) applications are common agricultural management practices. Our aim was to quantify the effects of long-term application practices on root growth and abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) under field conditions. We assessed the effects of lime and P fertilizer applications on barley yield, root growth and AMF abundance in 2016. Treatments were no, low, medium and high liming rate corresponding to application of 0, 4, 8 and 12 Mg lime ha−1 every 5–9 years since 1942 combined with no or yearly application of 15.6 kg P ha−1 since 1944. At harvest, grain yield, root intensity (core-break) and AMF abundance at different soil depths were estimated. Root development was monitored during early growth with minirhizotrons in treatments receiving low, medium and high liming rates and P fertilization. A quadratic model relating grain yield to liming rate estimated yields to peak at 6.4 Mg lime ha−1 with yields of 4.2 and 3.2 Mg grain ha−1 with and without P fertilization, respectively. Low and medium liming rates resulted in greater AMF abundance, especially in the no P treatments. During early growth in P-fertilized treatments, 77% and 65% more roots developed in the soil profile when treated with medium and high liming rate, respectively, compared to low liming rate. We conclude that long-term application of lime in soils receiving yearly P fertilization improved conditions for root growth in soil layers below 30 cm, but at the high liming rate, this did not translate into higher yield. 相似文献
